LOCAL footballers have paid tribute to South African international Jayden Adams’ talent, humility and contribution to the game following his death.

Adams died on Saturday at the age of 25 just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South African authorities have confirmed the midfielder’s death, and the police say the circumstances remain under investigation.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder had enjoyed a meteoric rise after beginning his professional career at Stellenbosch before joining the reigning African champions in 2025.

He featured in South Africa’s group-stage matches at the World Cup and helped Bafana Bafana reach the knock-out stages of the tournament for the first time in the country’s history.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) conveyed its condolences, expressing solidarity with South African football.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of the 25-year-old midfielder and extend our sympathies to the South African Football Association (Safa), Adams’ family, his club Mamelodi Sundowns and the wider South African football fraternity,” said Zifa.

Triangle forward Talent Chawapihwa described Adams’ death as a devastating loss for African football.

“This is heartbreaking news for everyone who loves football. Jayden was a talented player with a bright future, but more importantly he was a respectful and humble person.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in peace,” said Chawapihwa.

Amazulu forward Thandowelnkosi Ngwenya said Adams’ legacy will live on through the lives he touched.

“Football has lost one of its own. Jayden played the game with passion and commitment every time he stepped onto the pitch. Moments like these remind us that life is bigger than football. We stand with his loved ones during this difficult period and pray they find strength,” he said.

Fellow teammate Devine Lunga said Adams had earned the admiration of fellow professionals through his commitment to the game.

“It is difficult to find the right words at a time like this. Jayden touched many lives through football and his character off the field matched the quality he showed on it. We have lost a brother in the game. My sincere condolences go to his family and everyone affected by this tragic loss,” said Lunga.
