ZIMNINJA Academy yesterday received the five medals they won a few months ago, in the OTW World Online Championships from Malta.
The tournament was organised by the Mediterranean Karate Alliance (MKA) in partnership with Malta Tourism Authority and was held in Malta virtually.
And six-year-old Wilfred Junior Mashaya scooped gold in the boys Under-6 karate kata category. He beat opponents from Russia and Malta. Last year, Junior Mashaya settled for bronze in the same category.
His father, Wilfred Mashaya, got silver in the short weapons 35 years plus category. He lost to French and Russian opposition.
Vincent Fambira settled for the bronze medal in the kobudo short weapons 16-years plus category. Prince Chabanga and Prince Manhanga also got bronze medals in the 21 to 35 years and 11-12 years categories respectively.
The participants took part in styles that include Kobudo, Karate, Wushu and Taijuquan, among others. As has become the norm due to Covid-19, the competition was held virtually and judges adjudged video clips that were sent by different participants.
The duo of father and son Wilfred Mashaya and Wilfred Mashaya (Jnr) each got a share of silverware.
A total of 42 countries and 534 participants across the world took part in the virtual World Championship. Some of the countries that took part include the United States, Russia, Iran, Germany, Egypt, France, South Africa, Cameroon, Slovakia, India, Poland, Brazil, Italy, Israel, Portugal, Zimbabwe and the hosts Malta.
The medals took time to reach Zimbabwe from Malta due to shipping challenges.
