Speaking at the official hand over, NBTSZ public relations manager Ms Esther Masunda said the donation was in appreciation of Nyamande’s efforts in encouraging people to donate blood. Nyamande lost an arm during an accident last year and says he owes his life to the blood transfusion he received after bleeding profusely.
“This is a token of appreciation that would enable Emmanuel to undergo an arm replacement next year in January,” she said. Ms Masunda said Nyamande had assisted the organisation publish a supplement that continues to provide useful information on the need to take blood donation seriously.
“It was Emmanuel’s initiative that we set up a supplement which seeks to continue sensitising people on blood donation and recruitment,” she said.
NBTSZ chief executive Mr David Mvere said the donation was a special award that will become an annual event.
“This donation is special because it seeks to recognise individuals who would have made notable efforts in educating people on the need to donate blood and Emmanuel becomes our first recipient,” he said.
Zimpapers group chief executive Mr Justin Mutasa hailed the donation and took time to urge motorists to be cautious during the New Year holidays.
“I thank NBTSZ for their efforts but let me take this time to warn motorists to make sure that you drive safely since most people tend to be over-excited with the coming of a new year,” he said.
Mr Nyamande said he felt humbled by the donation and urged Zimbabweans to take blood donation seriously.
“I am at loss of words with the donation and blood donation should be everybody’s responsibility as you do not know when fate awaits you,” he said.
