Zimpapers journalist Johnsias Mutonhori is set to join 20 young African journalists in Egypt this Saturday for a three-week training course aimed at enhancing knowledge and skills among media practitioners.

The course is funded by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the African Union of Journalists (AUJ) and will be facilitated by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR) and the Training and Media Studies Centre.

This year marks the 61st edition of the program, and the 20 selected journalists are primarily from Anglophone and Francophone regions.

Mutonhori expressed a desire to acquire new skills that will enhance news reporting in an ever-evolving media landscape.

“The media landscape is constantly changing, and I believe the industry is one of the most affected by technology.
“Therefore, as journalists, we must continue to learn and unlearn to keep pace with technological advancements,” he said.

Reflecting on the evolution of media, he noted, “We’ve transitioned from print media in the 15th century to broadcast, digital media, and now we are in the era of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.”

He added, “I hope this training course, which brings together journalists from various countries and regions, will serve as an exchange program to learn how other nations are adapting to technology in news generation and sustaining media businesses amid turbulence and uncertainty.”

Technology has opened new avenues for many players in the media sector, leading to the decline of several legacy media organizations.

Only those that have embraced technological changes remain viable.
The training course will also promote cultural exchange among different African countries.

“I was informed that a culture day will be observed during the course, and I see this as a great opportunity to showcase Zimbabwe’s rich culture to fellow Africans,” Mutonhori stated.
