Zimpapers journalists and staffers have been urged to ensure compliance with the Cyber and Data Protection Act (CDPA) in line with the provisions of the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). This came out this morning during a workshop organised by the management for journalists to be cognisant of the provisions of the Act.
Zimpapers’ Data Protection Officer, Mr Wellington Mudzuka, who was the Facilitator during the workshop, said it is important for journalists to be well versed with the Act. ” The Cyber and Data Protection Act is there to protect the rights of data subjects.
“It should come to us as a relief because we have so many cases where personal information has been abused. “We thank Potraz and the Government for this Act that will help us on how to deal with personal information and data subjects.
“This Act comes at a time when Zimpapers has embarked on digital transformation, and will guide us accordingly,” he said. Zimpapers Acting Editorial Executive, Mr Elias Mambo urged all media practitioners to embrace the Act.
“Data Protection is important, especially to us as a media house. We are handling big data daily across all our platforms, from advertising to editorial. “This Act is vital for the integrity, trustworthiness and sustainability of media organisations. For us to have credibility, it must be clear in the way we handle data and data subjects. It also speaks to issues of media ethics, how you handle stories.
“We are urging our journalists and other personnel to ensure they protect the data collected from data subjects,” said Mr Mambo.
