Authority has urged members of the public to desist from engaging in illegal night fishing as they risk being attacked by crocodiles.
The warning comes in the wake of a fatal crocodile attack on a 23-year-old man in Gonarezhou national park, whose remains had to be retrieved from the reptiles’ bellies upon their capture.
In a statement, ZimParks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said visitors into park estates should adhere to the rules and regulations established to preserve the safety of both individuals and wildlife.
“We wish to remind all visitors into parks estates of the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations established to preserve the safety of both individuals and wildlife within our estates.
“Recent events highlighted the dangers associated with illegal night fishing when a 23-year-old man lost his life in Gonarezhou National Park after being attacked by two crocodiles and his remains were to be removed from the bellies of the reptiles,” said Farawo.
In another incident, Farawo said an 18-year-old boy died after drowning whilst swimming in prohibited waters in Matobo National Park.
The two incidents, said Farawo, serve as a reminder to the risks associated with failure to follow laid down rules and regulations within the parks estates and implored members of the public to observe the strict designated 6am to 6pm operating times of parks.
“Always follow the rules and regulations and familiarise with the wildlife present in the area in order to understand the potential dangers they pose. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone during this festive season,” said Farawo.
He urged members of the public, who witness any unsafe activities or have any concerns to contact their offices. – New Ziana.
