THE Ministry of Health and Child Care has issued a cholera warning.
People have been urged to practice hygiene and drink safe water.
This follows outbreaks in neighbouring countries — Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa.
In a press statement, the Ministry said more than 43 000 cases, and 1 400 deaths, had been reported in the region since last month.
“We are now afraid of the situation, due to the high human traffic crossing our borders.
“There is a high risk of importation of cases into the country, especially considering that Zimbabwe is a transit route for most SADC countries.
“On February 12, Zimbabwe confirmed a case of cholera in Chegutu town, Mashonaland West, and the person has since recovered.
“On February 17, a second case was reported, again in Chegutu town, and investigations are underway.”
The statement added: “To avoid the spread of cholera, please make sure you drink and use safe water and boil it at all times.
“Practice hygiene at all times, including washing hands before eating, after visiting the toilet and desist from eating food that has not been prepared in a hygiene manner.
“If anyone presents with watery diarrhoea immediately report to the nearest health facility or call the Ministry’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre toll free number 2019 for assistance.”
