Zinara compiles road funds report

THE Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) has resolved to compile periodic reports that will be availed to the public showing its revenue inflows and expenditure.

Board chairman Albert Mugabe said the move, aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in the parastatal’s operations, was prompted by public concerns on how Zinara funds, especially from tollgates, were used.

“Most people think Zinara has got a lot of money, which isn’t true. The problem is lack of information to the public. In fact all the money we collect goes back to the road.

“We’ll be releasing documents showing what we collect and where that money goes for the public to scrutinise,” said Mugabe.

“We’ve already compiled something explaining what we’ve collected so far in 2015 and who received what.”

He said Zinara was collecting an average of $200 million per year, which was not enough compared to an estimated $5 billion required to spruce up the dilapidated road network countrywide.

Mugabe urged the motoring public to pay toll fees and other licences to facilitate improved road development.

He said Zinara was aware of motorists who evade paying toll fees and said the authority has engaged the police and would soon launch a blitz on such errant individuals.

Mugabe said paying toll fees and vehicle licences was a legal requirement for all motorists.
