Zinwa warns of downstream flooding as major dams spill

Online Reporter

THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has warned of downstream flooding after some of the country’s dams have started spilling, as the national dam levels rise to 86 percent.

Most parts of the country have been receiving heavy rains, with dams such as Tugwi-Mukosi and Lake Mutirikwi already spilling.

Bubi-Lupane Dam in Lupane is also 100 percent full.

While national dams are almost spilling, most community dams have already filled up, and there have been incidents where dam walls have burst.

In a statement, Zinwa said communities in low-lying areas should be alert for possible flooding in downstream areas.

“Consistent rainfall activity across much of the country has led to increased water levels in most dams and rivers, raising the risk of flooding in downstream and low-lying areas. In view of the above, the ZINWA would like to advise the public to be on high alert and to observe the following: do not cross or drive through flooded rivers, do not fish from flooded rivers, monitor the movement of children and livestock and secure irrigation equipment,” reads Zinwa statement.

It said the public should also avoid bathing or swimming in flooded rivers.

Zinwa said the public should also evacuate or move to higher ground when instructed to do so.
