THE Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) has been a beacon of resilience and progress in its 130 year-history, playing a pivotal role in the economic and social development of the country, its president Mr Mike Kamungeremu has said.
Speaking at the ongoing 2024 ZNCC Annual Congress, Mr Kamungeremu said this year the chamber celebrates an extraordinary milestone—130 years since its establishment in 1894.
He said this year’s congress is not just another event but a grand celebration of the 130-year journey, achievements and bright future.
Mr Kamungeremu said some of ZNCC’s achievements include pushing for the removal of illegal sanctions imposed on the country by Western countries and after a resolution at last year’s chamber congress, in April this year the executive order of the US cancelled sections of the sanctions.
“Over the past 130 years, the ZNCC has been a beacon of resilience and progress, playing a pivotal role in the economic and social development of our beloved nation. From our modest beginnings, we have navigated through storms and sunshine, always championing the cause of the business community in Zimbabwe. Today, as we stand on the shoulders of our predecessors, we reflect with pride on our rich history and look forward with boundless optimism.
Our theme for this year, “Unlocking New Frontiers for Sustainable Industrialization and Climate-Smart Business Growth,” captures the essence of our mission. It is a call to action to embrace innovation, sustainability, and resilience as we tackle the complexities of the modern business landscape and address the pressing challenges posed by climate change. This theme is not only timely but crucial for our collective success and the prosperity of future generations,” he said.
Me Kamungeremu said he is filled with immense pride at the strides made during his term as ZNCC president which he leaves at this conference to become immediate past president.
He said the chamber forged stronger partnerships both locally and internationally, creating new avenues for trade and investment and advocated relentlessly for policies that foster a conducive business environment, leading to significant improvements in our economic landscape.
The ZNCC supported ground-breaking initiatives that drive innovation and industrialization, ensuring businesses remain competitive on the global stage and prioritising sustainability, promoting practices that are environmentally responsible and economically viable.
“Under the banner of our theme, we have delved deeper into the complexities of our economy and the global imperative of sustainability. Our mission has been to not just navigate these challenges but to seize the opportunities they present.
“In the face of currency instability, high inflation, and structural impediments, Zimbabwe has shown remarkable economic resilience. Our GDP grew by an impressive 5.3 percent in 2023, driven by expansions in agriculture, mining, remittances, and foreign currency inflows. Aligned with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), ZNCC remains committed to advocating for economic governance, structural reforms, and inclusive growth.
“We continue to call for unconditional removal of sanctions and we are still calling for the removal of whatever is left on the sanctions to be removed,” he said.
He said ZNCC advocacy emphasises the importance of policymakers consulting with key stakeholders, embracing market principles, and prioritizing macroeconomic stability.
This is vital for ensuring a conducive business environment and sustainable economic growth.
He said the ZNCC has been a steadfast catalyst for business development, acting as a bridge between the private sector and Government entities.
“Our advocacy has shaped policies that support business growth, enhance competitiveness, and foster a conducive business environment. Through various initiatives—including training programs, networking events, and knowledge-sharing platforms—we have empowered our members with the tools and resources needed to thrive.
“As we navigate the global economy’s challenges, we are confident that by working together and leveraging our collective strengths, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve sustainable economic growth and prosperity for all.
“Let us harness the power of our collective wisdom to unlock new frontiers, drive sustainable industrialization, and champion climate-smart business practices. Together, let us inspire innovation and build a brighter future for generations to come,” added Mr Kamungeremu.
