Rick Fulton, who is member of the association’s committee, said the body was officially formed in the final quarter of last year after identifying some athletes abroad who are taking part in snow sports.
The association’s committee is led by former Prince Edward School headmaster Kevin Atkinson as the president, Rod Smith comes in as the vice-president, while Heather Steyn sits on the secretary’s post and committee member Fulton completes the leadership.
Fulton said there was a possibility that Zimbabwe may appear at the next Winter Olympic Games in Sochi but noted that it was still early to be certain about the development.
“There is a possibility we might be able to do it for 2014 but it’s a long term strategy. There is one (athlete) studying in the United States but we still have a long way to go, it’s a bit early to tell at this stage,” said Fulton.
ZOC president, Admire Masenda, said it has always been their dream to see Zimbabwe competing at the Winter Games.
“It’s almost a fact of globalisation.
“We have athletes or Zimbabweans who are involved in snow sports overseas and the issue has been around and we have always had aspiration of trying to harness and bring them on board,” said Masenda.
“So, by forming the snow sports association with a group, everybody is there in whatever sport it is, be it cross country skiing, downhill skiing, whatever winter sport is available. We group them together for the time being.”
