ZOC, Zifa to explain Mighty Warriors mess

Sport and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane has tasked the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee and Zifa to explain the confusion that greeted the Mighty Warriors on their return from Rio on Friday. At a media conference in Harare yesterday, Hlongwane said the Mighty Warriors deserved treatment in sync with the proud manner they did business at the Olympic Games in Brazil.

“The public spectacle surrounding the management of this aspect in general, and handling of allowances in particular, was unfortunate and admittedly indecorous given the valiant performance of our Mighty Warriors,” he said.

“Allegations that the Mighty Warriors were not received by Zifa and ZOC are inaccurate. Zifa, ZOC and multitudes of fans were present at the airport to receive the Mighty Warriors.

“In this regard, we need to note that organisational issues after departure from the airport into town and thereafter to their respective individual destinations was a matter for ZOC to handle, working collaboration with Zifa.

Hlongwane said Government availed allowances for the Olympic delegation, with each Team Zimbabwe athlete guaranteed a minimum of US$500.
