Munyaradzi Musiiwa in GWERU
The Castle Lager Premiership encounter between Chapungu and ZPC Kariba was yesterday abandoned due to a waterlogged Ascot following a heavy downpour just a few hours before the match got underway.Match Commissioner Japheth Mufiri decided to call off the match before kick-off after an assessment by referee Makonese Masakadza indicated that the pitch was flooded due to poor drainage.
Earlier this year, the ZIFA grounds committee led by CAPS United boss, Twine Phiri and CAF instructor Wilfred Makuna, condemned Ascot after it failed to meet minimum standards to host a Premiership game.
Last month Gweru City Council said it needed $48 000 to complete the renovations to enable the stadium to meet the required minimum standards.
ZPC Kariba had hoped to get sweet revenge after being thrashed 0-3 by Chapungu last year.
The Kariba side arrived in Gweru for that match after a 19-match unbeaten run.
Chapungu were also seeking their first win this season.
This becomes the second match to be abandoned this season after CAPS United failed to fulfill their fixture with How Mine last Friday.
