Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) last Wednesday donated an assortment of goods to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.
The goods, which comprised 2 000 bars of soap, 800 blankets, 40 food containers, 50 hard brooms, 50 soft brooms, 5 black boards, three big boxes of chalk, sanitary wear and medicines, were handed over to ZPCS Commissioner-General Paradzai Zimondi.
This was the second time that the ZCDC donated to ZPCS as part of their corporate social responsibility since 2017.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Comm-Gen Zimondi said the donation came at a time when it was much needed, as ZPCS was facing challenges in providing health facilities to prisoners.
“As the ZPCS, we really appreciates such worthy relations given that as a department we underpin and protect the fundamental values of our nation of which the most important of these is respect for the inherent dignity of all human beings, regardless of their social standing,” he said.
“We certainly do not want to let inmates feel that there is more punishment exerted on them beyond that of being sent to prison.
“Allow me on behalf of the ZPCS to register my utmost gratitude for the receipt of the various goods from the ZCDC which include 2 000 bars of soap, 800 blankets, 40 food containers, 50 hard brooms, 50 soft brooms, 5 black boards and 3 big boxes of chalk as well as sanitary ware and medicines.”
Comm-Gen Zimondi said the donation, especially the blankets would go a long way in keeping inmates warm during the cold season, especially now when it was at its peak.
“As you might be aware that this complex has three prisons that is Chikurubi Maximum, Chikurubi Prison Farm and Chikurubi Female, we wish to advise that some of the donated goods will be shared among the three prisons, we will ensure that no inmate is excluded,” he said.
