A Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) inmate has turned his period of incarceration into an opportunity for academic achievement after graduating from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) with a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Biological Sciences.
Robert Zivengwa graduated with an Upper Second Class (2:1), an achievement that highlights the potential of correctional education to transform the lives of inmates and equip them with skills for life beyond prison.
His achievement demonstrates that incarceration does not have to bring education and personal development to a standstill, with ZPCS providing inmates with opportunities to pursue academic and vocational studies as part of the rehabilitation process.
Through determination, discipline and access to education, Zivengwa has continued to pursue his academic ambitions despite being behind prison walls.
His graduation is a source of pride for ZPCS and reinforces the institution’s rehabilitation and reintegration mandate, which seeks to ensure that inmates acquire knowledge and skills that can help them lead productive lives after completing their sentences.
Zivengwa’s success also serves as an inspiration to other inmates, demonstrating that a correctional sentence can be used as an opportunity for personal development and transformation.
The achievement comes against the background of efforts by ZPCS to expand educational opportunities for inmates, allowing them to pursue studies at different levels while serving their sentences.
On Thursday, 73 inmates graduated at Bulawayo Polytechnic at the institution’s 97th graduation ceremony.
The graduates, comprising 68 males and five females, completed short courses in Boiler Making, Hospitality and Food Preparation, Plumbing, Carpentry, Auto Mechanics, Bricklaying, House Wiring, Tailoring, Cosmetology, Mechanics, Animal Husbandry and Crop Production.
