ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Service has begun preparations for the SADC Games expected to be held in South Africa this year.
Officer Commanding Harare Metropolitan Province, Commissioner Gilbert Marange, told H-Metro there was need for prison officers to take a break from their duties and refresh their minds.
“Our officers have been competing in various sporting disciplines preparing for the SADC Games to be hosted by South Africa this year,” said Comm Marange.
“These sporting activities keep our officers physically fit and it refreshes them from their busy schedules where they guard and monitor inmates.
“They deal with various criminals, among them highly dangerous criminals.
“Sport brings unity among them, laughter and time to exchange notes.
“Provincial competitions help in identifying the best to compete in the Commissioner General Week where participants for SADC Games will be selected,” said Comm Marange.
Among the participants, in various districts under Harare, were former CAPS United player Elton Chimedza and Mighty Warriors captain Mejury Nyaumwe.
Mejury guided Chikurubi Training Depot district soccer men as coach with Chimedza was one of the players.
Other sporting disciplines included volleyball, netball, athletics, tennis, darts, pool and tug-of-war.
