THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Sports Committee held the Sadc Games Selection in Ntabazinduna yesterday with the body’s five administrative regions competing in six sporting disciplines. The chairperson of the Sports Committee Assistant Commissioner, Rosemary Kamonge said the games will culminate in the selection of 100 athletes that will represent the country at the Sadc Prisons, Penitentiary, Correctional Services Sports and Cultural Exchange games slated for Botswana in August.
The five administrative regions, Matabeleland, Mashonaland, Manicaland, Midlands/Masvingo and National Headquarters sent male athletes to compete in football, tug-of-war while females squared off against each other in netball while both genders took part in darts, volleyball and athletics.
“We have selection panels that comprise three technical specialists in each discipline and they will be responsible for selecting the athletes who will represent us in Botswana. The games involve the prison officers and not prisoners,” she said.
The regional games will run for 9-15 August in the neighbouring country and will involve all Sadc member states.
Kamonge said competitions for other disciplines that include golf, basketball, lawn tennis, football for women, badminton and pool were on the list for the Sadc games.
