successes achieved by police officers during a recent stint with the United Nations as international peacekeepers is a true reflection of the deep-seated and established work ethos and discipline in Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga has said.
He made the remarks during a debriefing of a contingent of 13 officers who arrived in the country after completion of a 12-month international peace-keeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.
Comm-Gen Matanga briefed one senior police officer who is set to leave for Darfur on a similar mission.
“We are gathered here to receive a contingent of 13 officers returning home after their successful tour of duty in Darfur, the successes achieved by these police officers as international peace-keepers are a true reflection of the deep-seated work ethos and discipline established within the ZRP,” he said.
“It is in this regard that the organisation is held in high esteem worldwide, making our police officers highly sought after in peacekeeping assignments and other duties, as ambassadors of the organisation and of course the country at large, these officers have once again raised the country’s flag through their demonstration of professional policing conduct on the international scene,” Comm-Gen Matanga said.
He said Zimbabwean police officers have continued to attain high-ranking leadership roles in peace-keeping missions not only in Darfur, but in numerous war torn States across the continent and beyond.
“To this end, let me express my heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful work our police officers have been doing and continue to do on international assignments,” said Comm-Gen Matanga.
“As an organisation, we have learnt essential lessons from the experiences of returning officers from conflict-torn countries, to live peacefully.”
Turning to Chief Superintendent Richard Moyo, who is set to leave for Darfur soon, Comm-Gen Matanga said he is confident that he will stand up and lift the Zimbabwean flag high.
“The good work done by your colleagues who have gone before you precedes you, they were good ambassadors of our country and now is your chance to shine on the international scene,” he said.
“I am confident of your capabilities.”
