SENIOR officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) joined their regional counterparts in Eswatini to commemorate Royal Eswatini Police Service Day at Matsapa Police Academy, reaffirming the importance of cross-border cooperation in combating transnational crime.
Police Deputy Commissioner General Lorraine Chipato, who was representing Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba, joined His Majesty King Mswati III and other Police Chiefs from SADC in celebrating the Royal Eswatini Police Service Day.
She was accompanied by Assistant Commissioner Blessmore Chishaka and Chief Superintendent Tsitsi Chikono.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “Engaging with other police services is key in fighting transnational crimes and cementing policing relationships among SARPCCO member states.”
In June, Southern Africa held its 31st Annual General Meeting of the SADC Chiefs of Police Sub-Committee under the Inter-State Defence and Security Committee, focusing on regional actions to prevent and counter cross-border and transnational organised crime.
In a communiqué issued by the SADC Secretariat, the regional bloc said the meeting reviewed major regional peace and security concerns, with priority on emerging and transnational organised crime.
Among the areas discussed were cybercrime, financial crime, the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons, trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, illicit drug trafficking, motor vehicle crime, livestock-related crime, terrorism and other cross-border offences impacting the region.
