The Zimbabwe Republic Police should realign its training curriculum with provisions of the new Constitution if the organisation is to promote effective and efficient service delivery, Attorney General Johannes Tomana has said.
Officiating at a pass-out parade for 462 police officers at Morris Depot in Harare yesterday, Mr Tomana said Zimbabweans, including police officers, needed to accustom themselves with provisions of the new law if there was going to be an effective enforcement of the law.
“As first line of administrators of justice, it is imperative that all police officers, graduates included, be acquainted with basic principles of the country’s laws,” he said.
“With the new Constitution of Zimbabwe now in force, it is cardinal that Zimbabwe Republic Police re-align its training curriculum to new provisions of the supreme law in order to promote effective and efficient service delivery.
“It is gratifying that ZRP is placing deliberate emphasis on teaching subjects biased towards enlightening police officers on laws of the country as they will go a long way in ensuring effective enforcement of law and entrenchment for peace and tranquillity.”
The graduates who included 147 women and 315 males underwent training in areas such as Criminal Law, Police Powers and Human Rights and Criminal Procedure and Law of Evidence, Weapon Handling, History of Zimbabwe, Community Policing and Public Order Management.
