ZRP Women’s Network Chairperson Urges Public to Report Gender-Based Violence Cases

Sikhumbuzo Moyo – [email protected]

CHAIRPERSON of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Women’s Network, today called on the public to report all cases of gender-based violence (GBV).
Chief Superintendent Lethiwe Mhandu was speaking at Mpilo Central Hospital ahead of the official inauguration of a regional one-stop Centre specifically designed for victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
The centre is one of 18 such facilities being established across the country as part of a nationwide initiative by the Government and its partners.
The opening coincides with the provincial events marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an annual global campaign running from November 25 to December 10.
Chf Supt Mhandu said sexual offences remain a serious concern for law enforcement.

She highlighted the disturbing trend of GBV cases involving close relatives and respected community figures, including clergymen and traditional healers. “These are individuals who hold significant positions in our society, and it is troubling to see them implicated in such offences,” she said, urging victims and witnesses to come forward without fear.
Chf Supt Mhandu cautioned the public against using unregistered vehicles for transportation, recommending instead the use of Public Service Vehicles to ensure safety.
“We must prioritise safety in our communities, and using registered transport is a crucial step in that direction,” she noted.
She reassured attendees that police stations serve as walk-in offices where anyone is welcome to report GBV cases confidentially.
“Our doors are always open, and we encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed abuse to come forward. Your voice is important in the fight against gender-based violence,” Chf Supt Mhandu declared.

The call to action from the ZRP Women’s Network comes amid ongoing efforts to combat GBV in Zimbabwe, with authorities working to create a supportive environment for victims.
By encouraging transparency and open communication, Chf Supt Mhandu aims to empower the community to take a stand against violence and support those affected.
