THE Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) CEO Mr Justin Bgoni has thrown down the gauntlet to young innovators, urging them to develop a sustainable pension fund for the informal sector, a move he believes could unlock significant economic potential.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Mr Bgoni said this is an untapped opportunity, citing Rwanda’s successful Ejo Heza scheme, which boasts over 3 million subscribers.
“A difficult but feasible business opportunity in Zimbabwe is a pension fund for the informal sector. Rwanda has Ejo Heza Scheme with more than 3 million subscribers.
“Our economy needs savings that can be channeled through the capital markets. A challenge for a brilliant young person out there! Would listen to someone with an idea on this. We have the technology to do it,” he said.
The proposal sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users expressing skepticism, citing the volatile monetary environment.
Mr Bgoni, however, remained optimistic saying one can develop a product that is a hedge as life is about solving problems.
“Queen you shall be… until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear. On a serious note, there are young and bright people out there. I have met them. I know it is a matter of time before I am put out to pasture. Young people just need to believe they can solve our current Zimbabwean problems because they can,” he said.
He rallied young people quoting Steve Jobs.
“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. Do not just complain, let us change it. In the capital markets, I can try to change it with you,” he said.
As Zimbabwe’s informal sector continues to grow, Mr Bgoni’s challenge presents an opportunity for financial inclusion and long-term economic stability, if young innovators rise to the occasion.
