AS Zimbabwe continues to embrace a culture of health, fitness and community wellness, the upcoming 2026 Zimbabwe School of Mines Marathon is shaping up to be more than just a sporting event.
Scheduled for 26 July at Khumalo Hockey Stadium, the marathon presents yet another golden opportunity for fitness and health enthusiasts to come together in celebration of active living.
The event comes barely two months after the successful FitSquad Africa Day initiative held in Nkulumane on 25 May, where hundreds of residents participated in aerobics, wellness activities and fitness challenges designed to promote healthy lifestyles.
That event demonstrated Bulawayo’s growing appetite for fitness-focused community programmes, and the Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM) marathon is expected to build on that momentum.
For many residents, the marathon represents a chance to continue the fitness journey that was reignited during the Africa Day celebrations. Whether seasoned athletes, weekend runners or individuals simply looking to improve their well-being, participants will have a platform to challenge themselves while enjoying the camaraderie that accompanies major sporting events.
Organised by the Zimbabwe School of Mines, the marathon will feature a variety of race categories, including the 42.2km full marathon, 21,1km half marathon, 10km race and 5km fun run. Wheelchair races have also been incorporated, underscoring the organisers’ commitment to inclusivity and equal participation.
The event is expected to attract athletes from across Zimbabwe and beyond, transforming Bulawayo into a hub of sporting activity. Organisers believe the marathon has the potential to become one of the city’s signature annual sporting events, bringing together people from different backgrounds under the common banner of fitness, health and community engagement.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the marathon serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles at a time when non-communicable diseases linked to inactivity are on the rise globally. Health experts continue to encourage regular physical activity as a critical component of disease prevention, mental wellness and overall quality of life.
The marathon’s appeal extends beyond elite runners. Schools, corporate organisations, athletics clubs and social fitness groups are all expected to take part, creating an environment that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. The inclusion of a 5km fun run is particularly significant as it offers newcomers an accessible entry point into organised road running.
Participants will pay a registration fee of US$15, which includes race entry, race packs and medals, while businesses will have an opportunity to showcase their products and services through exhibition stalls available at US$200.
The event is also poised to provide a boost to Bulawayo’s hospitality and tourism sectors as visitors travel to the City of Kings for the occasion. Hotels, restaurants and local businesses stand to benefit from the influx of athletes, supporters and exhibitors.
With the success of the FitSquad Africa Day programme still fresh in the minds of many residents, the ZSM Marathon arrives at an opportune moment. It offers another platform for people to remain active, pursue their fitness goals and embrace a lifestyle centred on wellness.
As the countdown to 26 July gathers pace, organisers are encouraging early registration, confident that the event will not only showcase athletic talent but also reinforce Bulawayo’s growing reputation as a city that values health, fitness and community spirit.
For fitness enthusiasts, the message is clear, after Nkulumane’s inspiring Africa Day fitness celebrations, the ZSM Marathon presents the next big opportunity to lace up, hit the road and be part of a movement that is transforming lives through sport and wellness. – @FungaiMuderere.
