Mr Shi was the first to receive the award among the 10 laureates, who included Li Xiaolin, president of China Power International and Wang Xuehong, president of HTC and VIA.
This was ZTE’s second “Economics Figure of the Year” award from CCTV. Former president Hou Weigui was presented with the same award in 2004.
ZTE Corporation established offices in Zimbabwe in 2005. At the end of 2006 it built the first 3G network in Zimbabwe for Powertel.
ZTE was also responsible for building most of the network for Econet and Telecel.
Through these more than five million Zimbabweans now enjoy the mobile voice service while another million use the wireless data service every day.
CCTV is the most authoritative media outlet in China and has been running its Economics Figure of the Year award for the past 10 years.
The Economics Figure of the Year award enjoys nationwide recognition and attaches great importance to responsibility and innovation.
CCTV stated that “Shi Lirong, as an executive who has 20 years’ experience in marketing and management in the telecoms industry, launches the overseas marketing campaign of ZTE and always gives his top priority to customers.
“He leads a 20 000-strong ZTE sales team in over 140 foreign markets. He promotes ZTE’s international competition ability and wins trust from his global partners through practical attitude, customised services and flexible marketing policies.”
The latest statistics show that ZTE ranked first in international patent quantity in 2011 and has catapulted itself into the world’s top five telecoms equipment providers.
“Innovation is embedded in ZTE’s DNA. It is worth mentioning that ZTE captures the crown in the number of international patents this year and owns half of the patents in China’s telecoms industry. Our latest innovative technology integrates 2G, 3G and 4G and it took over 400 ZTE engineers four years to realise it. No other corporation has achieved it yet,” said Mr Shi.
He added that this honour belonged to all the employees in ZTE for their efforts were the backbone of the company’s success.
