THE Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (Zuj) has condemned the attack on Chronicle and Sunday News offices and called on the police to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book. Unknown assailants pounced on Chronicle and Sunday News premises at about 1am on Sunday and attempted to set the building on fire.
The culprits, who are still on the run, set on fire the hardwood double door at the Advertising department and disappeared.
Zuj secretary general Foster Dongozi said in a statement yesterday: “We strongly condemn the unwarranted and barbaric attack on Chronicle given the fact that it is one of the largest media branches in Zimbabwe.
“We are urging law enforcers to leave no stone unturned and track the culprits who are a danger to journalists and journalism freedom of expression.”
Dongozi also urged employers in the media fraternity to enhance safety and the security of journalists in newsrooms.
“We are now concerned as a union and we encourage employers to ensure the safety and security of journalists,” he said.
Dongozi said Zuj would inform international bodies such as the Southern Africa Journalists Association, Federation of African Journalists and International Federation of Journalists about the incident.
The building, which also houses B-Metro, Umthunywa and the Bold Ads, is situated at corner 9th Avenue and George Silundika Street.
It is believed that the assailants splashed a flammable liquid on the door before setting it on fire.
