THE Zimbabwe University Sports Association (Zusa) track and field championships roar into life at White City Stadium in Bulawayo tomorrow.
Thirteen universities comprising nine state and four private institutions will compete for honours at the championships being jointly hosted by Lupane State University (LSU) and the National University of Science and Technology (Nust).
The state varsities are Nust, University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Midlands State University (MSU), LSU, Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE), Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU), Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT). The privately-owned are the Catholic University in Zimbabwe, Women’s University in Africa, Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University and Africa University.
UZ took poll position in last year’s championships followed by MSU, GZU and Nust in that order.
ZUSA marketing and communications board member Sibonile Madhodha said the championships will be used to choose a team to represent the country at the Federation of African University Sport (Fasu) games in South Africa.
“The Fasu championships will be held at the University of Johannesburg in July,” said Madhodha.
“We’re expecting the universities’ students to show off their prowess in track and field. We hope the general public will come and cheer the students as entrance is free,” she said.
The UZ’s Gereni Muwishi (200m) and Liona Musikavanhu (100m, 200m and 400m) as well as Nust’s Nyasha Charadura (200M) did well at the International Universities Sports Federation (FISU) last year.
Madhodha said action will switch to Gweru from Friday to Sunday for the Zusa Cluster 1 ball championships to be held at MSU.
The balls games will feature football, handball, basketball, golf and netball.
