he failed to get licences for boxers are on the bill.
The former Commonwealth flyweight pugilist said most of the boxers are yet to be granted their licences by the new Zimbabwe National Boxing Board of Control.
“We have seen that it’s no longer possible to host the boxing matches on Africa Day because some of the boxers have not secured their licences.
“So far it’s only Monalisa Sibanda and trainer Clyde Musonda who have been licensed while the rest were still doing their medicals.
“We are almost done with the medicals and I hope that by then end of next week all the boxers will have been licensed and then we sign the contracts for the tournament.
“The other thing that also forced us to defer the event is the limited resources we have sourced so far and we would use this time to look for more sponsors and reach our target for the budget,” said Zvenyika.
Zvenyika said the boxers are required to pay US$12,50 as affiliation fees for the remainder of the year, while promoters are required to pay US$75 for the year and a fee of US$50 has been pegged for managers, trainers and technical officials per year.
In the main bout, Zvenyika is expected to fight Spencer Matsangura in a bantamweight bout as he officially retires from the square ring that gave him fame, a little fortune and also courted him controversy.
His last official bout ended in humiliation in September 2006, when he was floored in the first round by Mbwana Matumla in an elimination bout in Tanzania after he had defied authority and sneaked out of Zimbabwe for the international match.
“My aim is to bid farewell to the fans and also inspire the new generation. I just hope boxing will reclaim its place as one of the popular sports in Zimbabwe,” said Zvenyika.
According to the match-maker, Musonda, top female boxer Sibanda will fight Happiness Banda in a welterweight bout while Wesley Macdade had been paired against Edmos Takawira in a light-heavyweight contest.
Rising female pugilist, Fortunate Chidzivo, could fight Bridgette Mutura in a bantamweight contest while Brilliant Tinago, son to the legendary Langton “Schoolboy” Tinago, is set to make his debut as a professional boxer.
