Zvishavane Town Council has embarked on a $15 000 street lighting project designed to relight on all the town’s major roads. The project is catered for in the local authority’s 2018 budget. Town secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said there was a drive to conclude work in the shortest possible time.
“We are installing the lights in tandem with the expansion of the town, so we want to make sure that the project is completed in the shortest period of time. The other thing is that we are also identifying other spots which are lacking light at night, so we are installing public lighting in those areas,” said Mr Mukutu.
Residents believe improved lighting will help reduce increased incidence of muggings.
“It was high time that council installed street lights, and it was now becoming very dangerous to walk during the night. At least with the lights, people would feel safe and council needs to be applauded for the project,” said Mr Isaac Chirembo, a resident.
Pirate taxi drivers also welcomed the initiative as some of their clients were increasingly requesting door-to-door deliveries to guarantee their safety.
