CASH-STRAPPED Zvishavane Town Council is set to pump out $48 000 as service fees to a Government-appointed commission which conducted an investigation into corruption allegations levelled against the town’s former council chairperson, Mr Alluwis Zhou. The Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development last year dispatched a five member investigation team to investigate Mr Zhou in connection with abuse of office and corruption allegations. Mr Zhou was subsequently fired from the council.
The investigation team has tabled a $48 000 bill to Zvishavane Town Council for its one week investigation.
“The bill was shocking and the town secretary, Mr Tapiwa Mukutu has since approached the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo with a view to slashing the bill.
“The council also intends to come up with a payment plan as it cannot pay the required figure at once,” said the source.
Mr Mukutu yesterday confirmed that the council approached Dr Chombo resulting in the bill being slashed.
He, however, could not be drawn into confirming the revised bill.
“I don’t think its worth discussing in the media but we have approached the Minister and the bill was slashed to some reasonable amount. We are paying that money in batches and we have since paid part of it,” he said.
