ZVISHAVANE Town Council will spend its $1,6m devolution grant on purchasing earth moving equipment that will be used on road rehabilitation programmes.
Government committed $320 million facility to facilitate devolution in local authorities and provincial councils for the success of the devolution exercise. Zvishavane town secretary Mr Tinotenda Mukutu said they wanted to purchase a bulldozer and tippers as such equipment will come in handy in their road rehabilitation projects.
“As Zvishavane council we have resolved to purchase road equipment including bulldozer, motorised grader, tippers, motorised bowser and a caterpillar. Such equipment will come in handy in our road rehabilitation projects that we are carrying out. Of late, we have been hiring such equipment from other companies, but purchasing the equipment will help us save money,” he said.
Recently the mining town completed the rehabilitation of 10 kilometres of roads in Mandava and Makwasha high density areas at a cost of $1,2 million, and now the town has moved to the second phase of the road rehabilitation programme where they want to rehabilitate another 10km stretch for $1,2 million.
Mr Mukutu said after completing the second phase, the council will move over to the next phase of the project.
“From the second phase we will move to the third and final phase for the year in terms of roads rehabilitation. We have since tarred some roads, which were gravel and when we finish the programme we hope to have tarred all roads in the high and low density suburbs as a way of improving service delivery,” said Mr Mukutu.
The Midlands province received the $41,6 million it was allocated in the 2019 National Budget for devolution programmes.
