ZIMBABWE Wushu Federation are this month set to elect a new substantive committee to run their affairs for the next four years following the approval of their amended constitution last week by the Sports Commission. The elections are pencilled to take place on April 21 at the Sports Commission’s headquarters in Harare. The national federation have been under the supervision of an interim committee with White Mukweya as the president, following the suspension of the previous executive committee led by Gilbert Makowah for failing to comply with the SRC Act.
On its appointment, the interim committee had to revisit the national federation’s constitution, align it with the current trends in sport and register it with the Sports Commission, among other tasks.
They were also expected to set up structures at ward, district and provincial level since the sport was mainly visible in Harare, as well as organising local competitions and ensure participation at regional, continental and international level. Mukweya said the constitution was approved last week by the Sports Commission, paving way for elections.
“We successfully compiled this (constitution) as a team, it’s now in place and was adopted by stakeholders in provinces. So it’s now in use. The association is now legally registered,” said Mukweya
The committee had set April 4 as the closing date for submission of nominees but they have had to extend to today.
Interested candidates will contest for the president’s post, vice-president and committee members while the secretary-general and treasurer will be appointed on merit.
“The deadline was supposed to be the 4th of April. Unfortunately, very few submitted their nomination forms and currently it’s me contesting for the post of the president.
“The secretary-general and treasurer, those ones they are not elected, they are appointed by the executive, the president in consultation with the executive. Previously people could just be voted in,” said Mukweya.
Mukweya said they managed to establish provincial structures in Mashonaland East, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Harare, Manicaland and Midlands.
Sports Commission acting director-general, Joseph Muchechetere, said they were now finalising the registration of the constitution.
“It (constitution) was approved by the board last Friday. We are now engaged in the process of final registration, it’s a process but it was approved. I understand they have sent out a notice for elections, which is proper,” Muchechetere said.
