Two police officers who were nabbed by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission last week for taking a $1 bribe from a motorist have each been granted $50 bail by a Chinhoyi Magistrate.
Paul Muchenje, stationed at ZRP Chemagamba, Chinhoyi, and Shamiso Nyabasa of ZRP Chinhoyi Central appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court on Friday.
The complainant in the case is the State.
Blessing Mazinyama, a motorist, informed ZACC of the police officers’ corrupt activities, including demanding bribes ranging from US$1 to US$5 from motorists evading the Lion’s Den tollgate along the Harare-Chirundu highway.
The officers were also accused of threatening to impound vehicles evading the tollgate, and demanding a fine of US$100.
Zacc investigators set a trap and used a dollar note (serial number D101548630) while aboard Mazinyama’s vehicle.
When the police officers signalled Mazinyama to stop, he got out of the vehicle and handed the trap money to Muchenje, who put it in his trousers’ pocket.
Zacc investigators then disembarked from the vehicle and identified themselves before apprehending the two accused persons.
The two were not represented by any lawyer when they appeared in court.
