A 40-YEAR-OLD vendor from Nakai A village, under Chief Zimunya, died on the spot after being hit by a Toyota Hiace truck along the Mutare-Masvingo Highway.

The incident occurred on June 8, around 15:30pm.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said Lorraine Mukondo sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot while four others suffered severe injuries and were admitted at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

He said Kudzai Chigova (26) was driving the Toyota Hiace with two passengers on board, travelling towards Masvingo, and upon reaching the 56km peg, attempted to overtake a stationary vehicle.

“Chigova tried to overtake a stationary vehicle in front of him and realised an incoming vehicle was approaching. He then attempted to return to his lane, but swerved to the far left, lost control, and ploughed into five vendors by the roadside,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged drivers to exercise caution on the road.

“We urge drivers to be more cautious on the roads, especially when overtaking, and to always follow traffic rules and regulations to prevent such accidents in the future,” he said.
