OVER 100 households in Shurugwi are set to benefit from a fishery project which was launched by Government as the Second Republic continues to sponsor projects meant to improve livelihoods in rural communities.

Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Cde Davis Marapira at the weekend launched the fisheries project in Shurugwi where 10 000 fingerlings were stocked into Impali Dam.

Cde Marapira said another 50 000 fingerlings would be stocked into other dams across the province.

The targeted dams include Gwenhoro in Gweru, Zananda in Lower Gweru, Mabasa in Zvishavane, Chirumhanzu Dam and Totonga Dam in Shurugwi.

Cde Marapira said the fish will be first harvested after eight months.

“We have released fingerlings in Impali Dam. This is part of the Presidential community fisheries scheme.

” Another 50 000 will be distributed in five other dams in Midlands. These fingerlings should not be harvested until eight months when they breed. This will enhance fish consumption per household and create jobs through fish farming,” he said.

Villagers said they were looking forward to the fish farming project.

“It is an amazing business opportunity that has been created for us by our Government, what is left for us is to be responsible and wait for the time when they mature before we can start harvesting,” said a local villager Mr Amos Gumbo.

Mrs Rejoice Svova said women also need to be active and be part of the project.

“Our traditional leaders should make sure that when harvesting, even woman are involved,” she said.
