Renowned portrait artist Picasso Leon Siziba, known for his striking portrayals of prominent figures, has once again captured the spotlight with his latest work – a vibrant portrait of South African musician LeeMckrazy.
The musician, who was in Bulawayo for a performance on Saturday, was surprised with the artwork during his visit. Picasso expressed his excitement and pride at the opportunity to present the portrait to LeeMckrazy, describing the experience as both personal and emotional.
“I feel excited and proud. This presentation was different from others—it felt personal,” Picasso said.
“I never thought I’d get to this point, as sometimes it’s challenging to present to artistes like him on stage. I felt deeply connected with Leemckrazy, especially when he sang a song for me — it was an emotional moment. I’m grateful to share the stage with one of Southern Africa’s most trending acts.”
The portrait itself is a bold representation of LeeMckrazy’s journey and personality. Picasso explained the meaning behind the piece, which he described as different from his usual work. The vibrant cubist background symbolises the artiste’s colourful personality and vocals, while the puzzles on his face represent the struggles LeeMckrazy faced in his rise to fame. The incomplete puzzles suggest that the artist is still on a journey, searching for the final pieces to complete his success.
“The goldish tone of his face represents power and money, showing the strength he has gained through his journey,” Picasso explained.
LeeMckrazy was thrilled when he first saw the artwork at his hotel before it was presented on stage. He expressed his admiration for the piece, saying it was his favourite among all the artworks he had received.
He also praised the authenticity of Picasso’s work, noting that unlike some art presented in South Africa, this portrait was genuine and truly captured his essence.
“I love this artwork. Out of all the pieces I’ve received, this one takes the trophy,” LeeMckrazy said.
“In South Africa, sometimes we see fake art, but this one is legit. I really appreciate it.”
Picasso said his artistic journey goes beyond just his own work and the musicians he collaborates with. He advocates for the unity of South African and Zimbabwean art, hoping to see a closer bond between the artistic cultures of the two countries.
“The movement is not just about me, the artwork, and the artiste, but about South African and Zimbabwean art coming together,” Picasso said.
“I hope Zimbabwean artistes, especially those from Bulawayo, can collaborate more with South African artistes. We must feature and support one another equally, both on stage and in the industry.”
