108 golfers to tee off for Kamandama

A FIELD of 108 golfers will take to the greens for the Kamandama Memorial fundraising golf tournament set for the Hwange Golf Club tomorrow.

According to the draw card released yesterday, the field will tee off at 9:30AM with the likes of Hwange Golf Club captain Victor Rakabopa, Edwin Moyo and Lucy Chikoti, the mother to the Premier Soccer League marketing manager Rodwell Thabe, among the golfers set to take part.

A four-ball, better-ball scoring format will be used.

Four-ball is a type of match play that golfers engage in pitting a pair of players against another pair.

Under the better-ball scoring format, the two players in the team each play their own golf ball throughout the round.

On each hole, the two team members compare scores, and the lower of their two scores (the better ball, in other words) counts as the team’s score.

Hwange Colliery Company managing director Thomas Makore’s group will tee off at 11:06AM, a few minutes after company secretary Thembelani Kole Ncube would have taken to the greens.

The golfing day is part of Hwange Colliery Company’s efforts to fundraise for widows and orphans of the 427 miners who perished on that unforgettable Monday morning of June 6, 1972 following an explosion at the Kamandama underground mine.

Former captain Vumi Moyo and Robson Dumani are the defending champions.

There have also been calls to include other popular sports like football as part of the fundraising drive, with locals, including those who lost relatives in the disaster, last year saying golf was too elitist for them.

Chairman of the Kamandama Widows’ Fund and the colliery company’s human resources boss Fati Mpofu indicated in 2014 that the idea was a possibility as long as they could get corporate support to bring in teams such as Highlanders or Dynamos to play against Hwange Football Club.
