Yesterday saw Harare basketball teams dominating in the first round matches with Richwood beating Ruwa 20-0 when they were awarded a walkover.
Danhiko defeated BCD from Bulawayo 22-6 in a one-sided match while Shining Stars of Chitungwiza beat Woolves 20-8.
They went on to beat Qhubeka 35-4.
In the women’s section Shining Stars beat Qhubeka 20-0 and Richwood defeated Woolves 20-0.
In high jump for boys 18 to 19years Robert Muneya of Copota School for the Blind came out on tops with a jump of 1,57m.
Cherutombo’s Vincent Muchenje was second with 1,55m and Lawrence Manzini from Copota finished on third with 1,3m.
In the girls 10 to 14 years category Tanaka Dokora topped the tables with a jump of 1,2m followed by Beulah Gudekude with 1,1m.
The Games organising committee chairperson, Godfrey Majonga, said they were happy with the way the competition took off yesterday.
“We are very happy with the way the Games have started.
“The teams arrived well and by last night (Thursday), they were almost all here, one or two arrived early this morning (yesterday).
“We are happy that 108 teams managed to register and managed to come.
“However, we don’t have any foreign participants. We sent invitations to our friends, Botswana and Zambia and they said they are looking for sponsorship, in particular Zambia.
“We hope that next year when we celebrate our Silver Jubilee they will be here,” said Majonga.
The Games will be officially opened today by the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe, who is the patron of the Games.
Majonga said they were indebted to the First Lady for making the Games a reality.
“Once again we are grateful to our patron, the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe for coming in and ensuring the Games take place.
“There are also other sponsors who have come in with cash and other things on top,” said Majonga.
Over the past years the Games were being held over two days and Majonga said they have decided to extend the days due to the growth of the Games.
“We had to extend the number of days for the Games due to the growth and popularity of the Games.
“We realised there are more participants and clubs coming and we need to be able to complete the competition in all disciplines,” said Majonga.
Jairos Jiri Kadoma are the defending champions.
