A development partner, United Nations Office for Projects Services (UNOPS) has poured in $1,2 billion to Chipinge Town Council to improve the town’s water reticulation system.
The development will see the local authority expanding its water reticulation system from the main water supply, Bangaazani Dam.
The council is currently grappling to supply water to all residential areas due to ageing small pipes that are failing to meet the growing population of the town.
Once completed, the Bangazani Dam water pipes will be upgraded from 300m to 500m.
Acting town secretary, Mr James Mutemera confirmed the development and said construction is underway.
He said the project will also upgrade the storage tanks.
“Chipinge Town Council and UNOPS are embarking on a massive water project that seeks to end the town’s water woes. We received funding from UNOPS to upgrade the water systems from the main dam.
“The water pipes will be enlarged in order to meet the growing demand of water in the town. The project will also see storage being upgraded to a 8,5 million-litre tank.
“The volume of the treated water will also be improved by this project,” he said.
Mr Mutemera said the project will also empower the local community through job creation.
Chipinge residents this week experienced water challenges following a ZESA main line electrical fault which occurred last Sunday.
