A Dramatic twist unfolded on Zimbabwe’s Harare-Chirundu highway after a deadly bus crash exposed what may be an illegal migration racket. Seventeen Malawians, busted without valid documents, were dragged before Karoi Magistrates’ Court following the March 30 smash that turned tragic – and suspicious.
The Malawian-registered Achisi Bus slammed into disaster near the 165km peg, but the real shock came when police combed through the wreckage and found 17 undocumented passengers. To add fuel to the fire, the bus driver bolted from the scene – vanishing into thin air and leaving a cloud of human trafficking suspicions behind.
“These individuals had no proper entry papers,” said prosecutors. “This raises serious questions about how and why they entered Zimbabwe.”
The group has been remanded in custody until 16 April 2025, as authorities scramble to find a Chewa interpreter. Investigators suspect the bus may have been part of a trafficking syndicate exploiting Zimbabwe’s porous northern corridor.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed the developments.
Zimbabwe continues to grapple with the scourge of cross-border trafficking, as desperate migrants fall prey to syndicates promising a better life but delivering danger instead.
