An 18-year-old boy from Kingsdale in Bulawayo was arrested for impregnating his 15-year-old girlfriend who is a juvenile by the law.
Ashley Vuyisile Sibanda (18) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Beverly Madzikatire charged with having sexual intercourse with a minor. He pleaded guilty to the offence. He was remanded out of custody for continuation of trial.
“I admit I was in a relationship with the complainant and had sexual intercourse with her. Complainant did not tell me about her age, I just assumed that she was above 21years old,” he said.
“The complainant had a lot of male friends. I suspect that she is implicating me for the pregnancy because out of all the boyfriends she had, I’m the one she loved the most that is why she chose me,” Sibanda said.
The court heard that, sometime in September 2022 the accused person sent the complainant a WhatsApp message with an unknown number and proposed love to the complainant saying he got her phone number from his friend.
The complainant continued chatting to the accused as friends. On 19 October 2024, the accused and complainant met in town and proceeded to Kingsdale where Sibanda stays and had sexual intercourse together.
It was further heard that sometime in January 2023, the complainant suspected she was pregnant and did a pregnancy test which came out positive and told the accused, who in turn told her to tell her parents about the matter.
The matter came to light in February 2023 when the complainant’s mother saw WhatsApp messages of her daughter that led her to ask whether she was pregnant, and the complainant admitted. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
