Tenant assaults landlord and destroys property

A 26-year-old woman from Sizinda suburb in Bulawayo was arrested for allegedly assaulting her landlord and destroying her house ’s windows on the day she was moving out of the house.

Yvonne ZiZhou(26) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Challenge Mahembe charged with two counts which are assault and malicious damage to property.

She pleaded not guilty to the assault offence and guilty to the malicious damage of property. The matter was remanded to 14 November 2024 for continuation of trial where judgement will be passed.

Zizhou in her defence, said that the complainant was the one who assaulted her after she had asked the complainant about the money she owed her.

“The complainant grabbed me by the collar and told me ‘Hey you child I do not have any money, and I do not want to see you in my yard again,” said Zizhou.

Zizhou said the complainant followed her to the cottage and assaulted her, smashed her phone to the ground using a hammer and ran away.

“When I ran after the accused, I found her fallen in her veranda. The reason why she chased me out of her house was because I refused to pay a gardener she had hired,” she said.

“I was actually told by the complainant’s grandson that tenants have actually died in that room where I was renting that is why I also decided to leave,” she said.

“I broke the windows because the complainant refused to refund me the money, she was owing me and also smashed my phone,” she said.

Circumstances are that on 7 September 2024 at around 1930hours in Queenspark East, Bulawayo, the accused person brought a truck to collect her property. She approached Miriam Nkomo Dlamini (56) her landlord for balance for rentals which she owed the accused person.

Dlamini told the accused person that she had no money at that moment, and they will arrange a date for her to collect it. The accused person was angered upon hearing this, became violent, grabbed Dlamini with her jacket and hit her with a hammer on her right elbow. Dlamini is said to have managed to escape and ran inside the house.

On the second count, accused damaged 41 window pans, one glass door, one wall mirror and three tiles by throwing stones. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
