AN 18-year-old man from Old Magwegwe in Bulawayo was handed a 36-month prison sentence for robbery.
Brendon Sibanda appeared at the western commonage magistrates court before magistrate Vakayi Douglas Chikwekwe, facing one count of robbery. He pleaded guilty to the crime.
He was sentenced to 36 months in prison, of which six months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within five years.
Sibanda will serve an effective 30 months in prison for his crime. Circumstances are that on 10 November 2024 at around 2300 hours, the complainant, Clarence Mkandla, was walking along Joshua Nkomo Street on his way home from work when he noticed that he was being followed by Sibanda along with three other accomplices who are still at large.
The court heard that after seeing the group following behind him, the complainant started walking fast to outpace them, but they managed to catch up with him.
It was heard that Sibanda and his three accomplices held the complainant and started taking turns beating him with their fists and a brick. They then proceeded to search his pockets, took US$55 and a cellphone before running off.
The court heard that the complainant followed Sibanda after the others had gone in different directions. After seeing where he had gone, the compliant then went to report the matter to the police resulting in Sibanda’s arrest.
While sentencing, the magistrate took into account that the weapon used to attack the compliant was a brick, which at some point was directed at the complainant’s forehead, which is a delicate and sensitive area.
