THE Zimbabwe U-21 womenas national hockey team is hoping to raise at least $2 000 from a a?Fun Golf Tournamenta? that will be held at Hornung Park, Burnside, Bulawayo on Saturday.
Event organiser Helene Stambolie said the team was in need of $20 000 before leaving for Santiago, Chile where the girls will represent the country in the Junior World Cup which is set to take place from 24 November to 4 December.
She said it was hopedA the event would raise at least $2 000 to contribute towards the $20 000 that is needed to cover travelling costs.
a?My daughter is the only Bulawayo player who has been selected for the 18-member squad, so I felt I should also do something in Bulawayo to raise awareness as many initiatives have been done in Harare,a? said Stambolie.
She added that the event would not only be open to golfers but also called on corporates and those willing to assist the girls before they leave.
a?At the moment we are busy with preparations to get prizes and food that we are going to sell during the golf tourney so that even those who donat play golf can still contribute something for a worthy cause by buying the food that will be sold during the day,a? she added.
Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) president Grant Campbell added that the association had also engaged the Ministry of Sports and other corporates who responded positively to the fundraising initiatives that they had previously done.
a?We are pretty much getting there. We needed about $110 000 for all the preparations and we will be hoping to realise the remaining amount by the time the team leaves on the 19th of this month,a? said Campbell.
Those interested in playing golf will be expected to pay $10 as entry fee and there will be prizes to be won during the day.
a?Every little bit counts. We will be taking whatever amount of money that people will be willing to assist with and hopefully the Saturday event will be a success,a? added Stambolie.
Zimbabwe put in a great performance during the Africa Hockey Cup after beating Namibia 2-1 in the semi-finals to book one of the two spots for the world cup in Chile alongside neighbours South Africa.
It will be the countryas second visit to Chile having been there for the same tournament in 2005.
