FOR employing a 16-year-old minor, a Mutare man was last week ordered to pay $200 fine.

Maxwell Mhlanga (42) of Number 20, Bunting Road, Greenside, denied the charges of employing the 16-year-old minor when he appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi.

However, Mhlanga was convicted after a full trial and fined $200.

Mr Shepherd Chavarika prosecuted.

On November 29, 2015, Mhlanga approached the minor who was sitting at Meikles Park with her friend and told them that he could secure employment for them.

“Mhlanga went with the two girls to his house and stayed with them for a week. The minor went away, but the complainant later returned after a day and stayed with Mhlanga at Number 20, Bunting Roadin, Greenside.

“On December 14, 2015, Mhlanga secured employment for the minor in Greenside. The employment lasted for two weeks,” said Mr Karombe.

On January 2, the minor advised her mother through a text message that she was working in Mutare.

The following day she was taken by one Abel Mushauripi who escorted her to make a police report leading to Mhlanga’s arrest.

In defence, Mhlanga told the court that he did not know that the complainant was a minor when he employed her.
