MINISTER of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene, has called upon the people of Manicaland to be proud of their history and celebrate together with the rest of Africans across the world who are celebrating the Black History month.

She made the remarks at the Black History Month celebrations which were hosted by Africa University at Meikles Park last weekend.

“Being African comes with a lot of important events and we should take the Black History month seriously because as Zimbabweans, we know very well that we have the liberation war which is a significant event in African history,” she said.

Cde Chimene, who is a descendant of the Chingaira Clan, said she was proud of that and as the world celebrated the Black History month, she also took part in celebrating her family history.

“I am personally from the Chingaira Clan and I am proud of it.

“Whenever people take time to celebrate our history, I take pride in that.

“Africans should remain Africans regardless of the country one may be staying in,” she said.

She added that President Mugabe has been playing a pivotal role in Black History because of his continuous call on Zimbabweans to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

As part of their observance of the Black History month, students from Africa University joined the Environmental Management Agency in its waste management operation by cleaning up the Chikanga Spar area.

Also present at the ceremony was Mutare mayor, Councillor Tatenda Nhamarare who said that keeping Mutare clean was everyone’s responsibility hence everyone should play a role in managing waste well.

The Black History month is celebrated in February annually in remembrance of important people and events in the history of Africans and African Americans, like Martin Luther King, Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela among others.
