THE body of a 32-year-old Shurugwi man who was found dead by the road side in a suspected murder case early this month is still lying at Shurugwi District Hospital mortuary amid revelations that relatives are demanding 15 cattle from the man suspected to have killed him.
Lawrence Chaitezvo’s body was found lying dead near Shamba Business Centre, Village Mwedzi, Chief Nhema on 5 November with visible injuries.
Police later picked Brighton Mugwisi who is reportedly now in remand prison awaiting trial on murder charges.
Chronicle learnt yesterday that the Chaitezvo family is demanding 15 beasts and a virgin from the Mugwisi family before any burial arrangements could be made.
One of Chaitezvo’s relatives, Mr Langton Jamba (65), confirmed that they have set conditions for the burial.
“It’s a family issue but this is what we have agreed as the bereaved family. We lost our son in sad circumstances and we have resolved that there should be compensation in the form of cattle and a virgin girl from the killers of our son,” said Mr Jamba.
“We have met the local headman, Headman Tubugare, with our proposal and the family of the accused person is now aware of our position.”
Mr Jamba, however, declined to confirm on the number of cattle the family is demanding, but insisted that their demands should be fulfilled before the burial.
He said the beasts would be given to Lawrence’s wife and daughter.
Mat South gets $500 000 dipping chemicals
Chronicle Reporter
MATABELELAND South got a shot in the arm in its restocking exercise when it received dipping chemicals worth US$500 000 under the Presidential Well-Wishers Special Agricultural Inputs Scheme. The chemicals, which included packs and boxes of tick buster amitraz, closavet dosing, oral solution, venton wound oil, beta tick grease, delta tick cattle dip and the delta tick pour on solutions meant to treat livestock diseases and prevent future infections have been delivered to the province.
In an interview at Irisville Secondary School in Mbalabala on Wednesday where the chemicals were received, the provincial administrator, Mr David Mpofu, said the donation was relevant to the province as it was a cattle rearing area.
“This donation from President Mugabe is an answer to our prayers as Matabeleland South because we do not only keep cattle for prestige but they are also our means of survival,” said Mr Mpofu.
He said it was now up to the people in the province to wisely use the availed resources and revive their livestock projects, which had been crippled over the past years.
“Our cattle were dying and have continued to die due to a number of viral and fungal diseases which will be treated using these chemicals that we have been given,” said Mr Mpofu.
He said the donation was an addition to the seed and fertiliser recently donated to the province by President Mugabe.
Mr Mpofu said the chemicals and farming inputs that were received were going to be distributed to all the seven districts of the province.
