Indigenisation: The united front
We most certainly cannot afford the current blandishment in the lexicography adopted by others in the debate of how and why the indigenisation of Zimbabwe’s economy through the empowerment of locals should not only be a matter of priority or electioneering, but in fact a matter of life and death.
This writer will interrogate a piece published by this paper a week ago, where writer Senator Obert Gutu took us through “an interrogation” of the indigenisation and empowerment policy as juxtaposed against the MDC-T’s investment and job creation rally rhetoric, perhaps later to be developed into a policy framework. If we owe anything to investors and
‘Gay rights’ — we hear you PM
Tomorrow marks that tragic day in Zimbabwean history when in 1965 during this eleventh month (“the month of the goat declared sacred by our people), on the eleventh day and eleventh hour, the renegade Rhodesian leader Ian Douglas Smith proclaimed the Unilateral Declaration of Independence.
History has since shown that Smith’s defiance was done on a day set aside to remember their kith and kin that fell in the 20th century’s two world wars.
With this unilateral act, he extended the quarrel started by his ancestors when they colonised Zimbabwe in 1890. This week, I look at a current issue in the context of UDI, and why it continues to be a devil in our

Beef prices shoot up
Obert Chifamba and Mary Kashumba
BEEF prices have shot up in and around Harare owing to dwindling numbers of cattle ready for slaughter, while the cost of some basic foodstuffs rose marginally, with manufacturers attributing this to the recent 31 percent increase in electricity tariffs.
The price of beef, as of yesterday, was ranging from US$5,80 per kg for commercial cuts to US$12 per kg for fillet in butcheries and supermarkets across the capital.
Before the sudden increase, economy beef was selling for between US$3,60 and US$5,50 per kg, while such specials as fillet were going for between US$6 and US$7.
Bulawayo, viewed as the hub of the beef industry, was not spared as meat was also reportedly scarce on the market, triggering price increases as dealers profiteered.
Agricultural Marketing Authority director production and operations Mr Maxwell Chikanda said the low supply of beef could have been

President hails Chinese support
Herald Reporters
PRESIDENT Mugabe yesterday lauded the Chinese government for its resolute defence of Zimbabwe’s sovereignty in the face of aggression by the West led by Britain, the United States and their European allies.
The President made the remarks during a meeting with visiting vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Mr Zhou Tienong.
Mr Zhou arrived in the country on Monday leading a four-member delegation.
The visit seeks to strengthen the already strong bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and China.
“We rejoice that our independence has remained solid. Our people remain in support of the party that fought and won their freedom and independence. But the imperialists as you know die hard. The imperialist countries of Britain, Europe and the US have continued to undermine our country, small as we are. This is because of our resources but we are grateful to the stance
