For the past 14 years, the ANSA judges panel had been shortlisting three people per category but have inflated the list.
Chairman of the judges panel Paul Nenjarama said his panel has met nine times this year to deliberate on the nominees in the various categories.
“We had over 120 nominees for the 15 categories that we have to adjudicate on. So it’s quite a challenge and the number has been whittled to 75. That’s about five per category. In some categories there are six nominees and that is how tight the process is and this is also meant to remove speculation on who the winner is.
“If there were three, you would know. Now there are six and it’s a little bit difficult,” he said.
The Sports Commission, Nenjarama said, had also come up with more nominations as a way of rewarding the athletes and officials.
“The nominees have been increased to acknowledge the hard work that is being done in the various sports by having more nominees rather than have few and also to reduce speculation,” said Nenjarama.
But while the Sports Commission seeks to recognise more nominees, the judges’ panel said they were disappointed by the failure of some associations to submit nominees. “As the judges’ panel, we have been disappointed that some sports associations did not submit nominations for adjudication.
“Most of the nominees that we got came from the tracking system from the SRC,” said Nenjarama.
