TRADITIONAL leaders are demanding to sit on the boards of mining firms in areas under their jurisdiction to ensure they bring development to their communities.
President of the Chiefs’ Council of Zimbabwe, Chief Fortune Charumbira, said foreign companies were looting the country’s minerals with little or no benefit to the communities.

He made the remarks during a stakeholders’ conference on the diamond policy organised by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development in Harare on Thursday.The conference sought to solicit views from stakeholders in the diamond industry for the formulation of the Diamond Act.

Town clerk suspended

CHITUNGWIZA town clerk Godfrey Tanyanyiwa has been suspended from duty indefinitely pending a hearing on corruption charges.
This comes as police closed in on eight other Chitungwiza Municipality officials from the revenue section.
The eight allegedly embezzled council funds.

Tanyanyiwa has been arrested on multiple charges for allegedly defrauding the council of over US$700 000 and has been placed under house arrest.

Police warn party leaders against violence

POLICE will “heavily descend” on political party leaders and their supporters who fan violence, regardless of their social standing, Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has said.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said it was worrisome to note that some political activists masquerading as vendors were attacking policemen on duty in cities.
He said such incorrigible acts, usually perpetrated around regional, continental and international events, were meant to create an impression that there was anarchy in Zimbabwe.
