13 firms complete coal exploration

THIRTEEN companies have completed coal exploration in Matabeleland North province with mining expected to start soon, a Government official said yesterday.
Last year, the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development issued 20 companies special grants to explore for coal in Matabeleland with returns of the exploration activities expected for presentation to Government after every six months.

A 33-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Mpopoma suburb  yesterday went berserk, split the skull of his estranged wife and chopped off her hands before trying to commit suicide by slitting his wrists.

He also allegedly attempted to hang himself.
The spine-chilling incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of yesterday when the couple fought over an undisclosed issue.
The woman, Mrs Miriam Takavingofa Nyoni (34), a mother of two children aged five and six, was brutally killed exactly four days after women in Bulawayo joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day.

Her husband, Goodman Nyoni, was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital after sustaining injuries after failing to commit suicide.

Mashonaland dominate junior swimming championships

MASHONALAND province proved to be the powerhouse in the National Junior Swimming Championships when they retained their title as the champions at Les Brown Pool yesterday.
The championships started on Saturday and attracted swimmers from Mashonaland, Midlands, Matabeleland, Mashonaland Country Districts and Manicaland.

Eleven teams register for Gwanda netball league

ELEVEN teams have registered to participate in the newly launched Matabeleland South Netball League whose season is expected to start at the weekend.
The teams that have registered for the league are Mawabeni,  Esigodini Agricultural college, Habane, Vumbachigwe Mine, Colleen Bawn, Gwanda Prison, Blanket Mine, Jessie Mine,  Shining Stars, Gwanda High School and Beitbridge side Mighty Stars.
